Just a few days ago, the Michigan receiver officially became a United States citizen years after fleeing war-torn Sierra Leone as a kid.

Michigan wide receiver Amara Darboh is looking for a breakout during his senior season this fall, but his biggest milestone may have come off the field.

“Being a citizen and being part of a great country is hard to put into words”, said Darboh. “But to be a citizen is awesome; it means a lot to me”. Darboh lived with his aunt and older sister, moving around Sierra Leone, Gambia and Senegal until he was seven, when his family was sponsored by a Christian group to move to Des Moines, Iowa.

“I’d have to repeat words over and over and over for my teachers, so they would understand me”, Darboh told the Ann Arbor News.

Darboh applied for citizenship last winter and had to pass a test this week before the ceremony.

Growing up, Darboh says he considered himself an American.

“It was the final step”, Darboh said about Thursday’s ceremony.
