UN Headquarters lit up with huge human figure in yoga pose

Dr Jitendra Singh said, International Yoga Day is not only an occasion for all of us to remind ourselves about the well-being of mind and body, but this is also an occasion to celebrate the world’s acknowledgement of time-tested Indian tradition.

The practice of Yoga is increasingly spreading all over the world.

In December 2014, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution with a record number of 177 co-sponsoring member states to declare June 21 as the International Day of Yoga.

The main event will take place in Chandigarh where Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lead the celebrations at the Capitol Complex of the City by participating in a mass Yoga demonstration with around 30 thousand people.

“Yoga can bring communities together in an inclusive manner that generates respect”. The Indian sage Patanjali is believed to have collated the practice of yoga into the sacred book called Yoga Sutra an estimated 2000 years ago. His Weibo posts include images of exercise positions and a list of Yoga’s effects on health.

Over the years yoga has become popular all over China.

“I am glad to be part of this global yoga festival in Paris. The camp is expected to attract almost 5,000 Chinese Yoga practitioners in a reflection of the rapidly growing craze for Yoga in China.

In its support of the event, India has arranged top Yoga gurus to take lessons over five days.

A yoga camp was organised in Oxford in the United Kingdom ahead of the International Yoga Day which is all set to be observed across the world today.

Pictures on websites of Indian missions across the world showed that people gathered in large numbers to be part of the worldwide event.

Puducherry Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi has directed that awareness on yoga has to be created among students and public and encourage thousands to participate on the International Yoga Day.

The second anniversary is also being celebrated across Australia with Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull hailing Yoga as one of India’s gifts to the world.
