UN Secretary-General calls for global ceasefire on worldwide Day of Peace

The General Assembly has declared this as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, both within and among all nations and peoples.

As the world today observes Inter-national Day of Peace let us not lose sight of the fact that without justice there can be no peace. Last week, proclaimed as the Week of Peace, saw festive rallies, seminars, lectures and film screenings in the country’s regions.

The United Nations’s global Day of Peace was celebrated on September 21 each year to recognize the efforts of those who have worked hard to end conflict and promote peace. “If, for one day, we can live in a world without aggression and hostility, we can imagine how much more is possible”, he added.

“In a matter of days, leaders from across the globe will gather at the United Nations to adopt the 2030 Agenda, our 15-year plan to achieve sustainable development”, the secretary-general said.

In 2001, the General Assembly by unanimous vote adopted resolution 55/282, which established 21 September as an annual day of non-violence and cease-fire.

In Afghanistan, in recent years the stop in fighting for peace day as resulted in millions of children getting life-saving vaccines.

Joining the United Nations chief at the Peace Bell ceremony and later at the worldwide Day of Peace Student Videoconference were UN Messengers of Peace anthropologist Jane Goodall and actor Michael Douglas, and UN Goodwill Ambassador and musician Herbie Hancock.
