UN Security Council condemns North Korea’s failed missile test

South Korean officials and global experts said the failed test heightened the possibility that North Korea would conduct a fifth nuclear test, possibly within weeks.

“We’re not really interested in the USA election”, he said.

Davis said the USA military thought the device was a road-mobile missile because the launch occurred at a coastal site where Pyongyang ordinarily does not test rockets.

The website, which monitors North Korean nuclear weapons programme, said satellite images from the Nyongbyon nuclear complex showed brisk activity at a radiochemical laboratory complex where weapons-grade plutonium is made.

Since the adoption of the new sweeping sanctions, North Korea has carried out at least two sets of ballistic missile launches that the council has condemned. Preparations are in full swing, including holding meetings to select delegates to the congress. Rodong Sinmun, an organ of the WPK, praised Kim Jong Un, saying he has lifted North Korea to the first rank of nuclear powers. Some believe that Kim may try to use the country’s claims of recent nuclear and missile success as a way to turn domestic focus toward tackling the country’s abysmal economy.

USA and South Korean authorities say a North Korean attempt to launch a missile failed catastrophically Friday.

The United Nations said Friday that North Korea’s latest test-firing of a missile was alarming and called for restraint.

“We’re going to continue to stand with them as they face these threats but also reiterate our commitment to the defense of our allies”, Earnest said.

“This is something that’s being done because of North Korea’s continued provocations”, he said.

Sources said the launched missile was the Musudan intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM), also known as the BM-25.

With a range of up to 4,000km, the Musudan missile can fly over South Korea and Japan to reach as far as Guam, where US military forces are stationed. North Korea has occasionally used such celebrations to stage nuclear or missile tests that outsiders consider provocations. The highest-level North Korean who defected to South Korea was Hwang Jang-yop, a senior ruling Workers’ Party official who once tutored Kim’s dictator father Kim Jong Il, and, was close to Kim Il-sung.

The April 15 birthday of Kim Il Sung – the grandfather of current ruler Kim Jong Un – is a major public holiday in North Korea, where key political anniversaries are often marked with displays of military muscle.

It is presumed that the missile North Korea unsuccessfully tested on Friday was the Musudan medium-range ballistic missile, which had not been tested in the past.

China and North Korea signed their Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance 55 years ago, under which Beijing pledged to give assistance to Pyongyang in the event of an attack.

The nuclear-armed state has staged several short- and mid-range missile launches but has yet to test the Musudan, which has an estimated range of anywhere between 2500km and 4000km. “That will look so bad, so I would say a nuclear test is more likely next”, An said.
