North Korea fired three ballistic missiles into the sea off its east coast on Monday, the South Korean and USA militaries said, as the leaders of the Group of 20 major economies held a summit in China, the North’s main diplomatic ally.
Obama called the series of ballistic missile launches “provocations” that flouted worldwide law and would only lead to further isolation.
A USA official who attended the G20 summit condemned North Korea’s actions for being a threat to both aircraft and maritime vessel operating in the zone.
The envoys from the United States, Japan and South Korea appeared before the press together to slam North Korea’s missile program.
“He stressed the need to continue making miraculous achievements in bolstering up the nuclear force one after another in this historic year”, said the North’s official KCNA news agency.
“And President Park and I agree that the entire worldwide community needs to implement these sanctions fully and hold North Korea accountable”.
South Korea’s defence ministry said the latest tests were of Rodong missiles with a range of 1,000 kilometres (620 miles). “We do not have any interest in an offensive approach to North Korea”.
Most recently, the isolated nation test-fired three ballistic missiles into the East Sea in a new show of force days ahead of the 68th anniversary of its government’s establishment which falls on Friday. The sanctions subject all cargo in and out of North Korea to inspections, bans exports of natural resources including coal and gold, tightens a weapons embargo and ends relationships with outside banks.
Speaking alongside Power, South Korean ambassador Hahn Choong-hee also called on the global community to send a message that if the North Koreans continue their behavior, “they will face much stronger and insurmountable and significant counter measures from the worldwide community”.
Kim, for his part, hailed the tests.
In return, the South-Korean president stated that Seoul will adopt a “strong” attitude regarding any challenges coming from North Korea.
South Korea has been very careful not to interfere or step into the sensitive conflicts over territorial issues.
North Korea failed to follow through on the required procedures before its latest launches.
“The most obvious difference from the last test is the change in warhead”, Hanham said. That missile flew 500 kilometres towards Japan, far exceeding the range of the North’s previous sub-launched missiles.

South Korean President Park Geun-hye told Chinese President Xi Jinping that North Korea’s behavior this year has undermined peace in the region and poses a challenge to the development of relations between the two nations.
