Indeed, while Syria claimed responsibility for Friday’s airstrike that killed Allouch, many rebel groups said it was a Russian operation that killed him.
“The next stage will witness the liquidation of those leaders who began the uprising”, wrote Abu Hassan al-Muhajer, another senior member of the group on Twitter, according to The Associated Press. Speaking to reporters after his talks with Russian foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, in Moscow, the Qatari foreign minister, Khalid bin Mohammad al-Attiyah, accused Assad of supporting terrorist groups. The United Nations had struck a deal between ISIS, Palestinian factions, and the Assad regime to remove the militants from the camp, thereby clearing the way for greater humanitarian aid to those civilians who will remain at Yarmouk.
Jaysh al Islam was one of the main rebel groups that attended a recent Saudi-backed opposition meeting in Riyadh and will be part of a negotiating team that is expected to hold talks with Assad’s government in Geneva. Tumah said that while he still intends to attend the peace talks in Geneva, Switzerland, in January, Assad should not have any role in the future of Syria. The group recently agreed to participate in a political process seeking to end the five-year-old conflict. “Continuing developments on the ground should not be allowed to derail it”, the statement said.
Opposition leader says Zahran Alloush’s death could be start of more targeted assassinations by Assad government.
Zahran Alloush, head of the powerful Jaish al-Islam Syrian rebel group, was killed on Friday east of Damascus, a monitoring group and Syria’s opposition said.
He is blamed by other opposition groups for the December 2013 disappearance of four prominent activists, including human rights activist and lawyer Razan Zaytouni. Buses that were to transport the fighters from Yarmouk were supposed to pass through Army of Islam-controlled Beir al-Qassab area in the southeastern countryside of Damascus.
He urged rebels to be “one cohesive rank” in the fight against the regime, stressing his group’s “moderate approach”.
A security source close to the negotiation said Jaysh Al Islam was to provide safe passage for the buses passing through Eastern Ghouta en route to Raqqa, ISIL’s de facto capital in Syria. Syria’s state news agency SANA highlighted the news, reporting the killing of the “terrorist” Zahran Allouch.
The authenticity of the recording could not be confirmed.
The Observatory said the warplanes struck a meeting during which Army of Islam commanders were preparing to launch an offensive against government forces and those of Lebanon’s Hezbollah near Damascus.
Elsewhere, a coalition of Kurdish and Arab groups said it seized the key Tishreen Dam from ISIS on the Euphrates River, as well as seven villages on the river’s eastern bank, in the northern province of Aleppo.
The news of the air strikes killing Alloush spread like wildfire among activists and rebel groups online. It lost the town of Sinjar in Iraq last month and areas across the border in Syria at the same time. According to SOHR, as many as 2,000 Islamic State group fighters were set to leave the city.
JERUSALEM (AP) – Israeli policemen shot and killed a Palestinian as he tried to stab them in Jerusalem on Saturday, police said, while another Palestinian was shot dead in the West Bank after ramming his vehicle into a checkpoint, the military said, in the latest incidents in over three months of unrelenting violence.

Jaysh al-Islam is said to have named Issam al-Buwidani as the successor of Alloush.
