UN working for tougher sanctions on North Korea — UN diplomat

Park said South Korea will continue its loudspeaker broadcasts of anti-North propaganda statements at North Korean soldiers along the border separating the two countries, calling it an effective psychological tool against the regime.

China was mentioned as a key player in future negotiations, but Beijing’s cooperation could have limits, given its traditional ties to the North Korea leadership. The four other members are the U.S., Britain, France and Russian Federation.

The six-party talks aimed at ending North Korea’s nuclear weapons program have been stalled since late 2008. The White House has vowed to “isolate” Pyongyang, and the House passed a bill aimed at further curtailing North Korea’s access to the worldwide financial system.

The U.S.is also looking into ways to “squeeze” the North with multilateral and unilateral sanctions, according to White House chief of staff Denis McDonough.

Shortly before Obama’s speech, the House voted to enhance sanctions against North Korea. “North Korea’s fourth nuclear test is an abnormal situation”.

“The five pending labor-related bills are improvement plans to create jobs for youths and strengthen the social safety network”, she said.

In 1991, Washington withdrew tactical nuclear weapons from South Korea.

Turning to Beijing, South Korea’s president Park Geun-hye stressed China’s condemnations of North Korea.

Following the warning shots, however, it immediately returned across the border into North Korea, a ministry spokesman said.

A North Korean defector, Ma Young-ae, told Reuters on Tuesday that she had met Kim in the United States and he had told church gatherings he was a missionary helping North Koreans.

Nam is originally from a place that’s now part of North Korea.

The project serves as a major legitimate revenue source for North Korea.

The speakers on the inter-Korean border started in 1962 and didn’t stop until 2004. “Now, Seoul suddenly finds itself in a position where it must change its entire diplomatic approach”, South Korea’s biggest circulation newspaper, Chosun Ilbo, wrote in an editorial.

Hwang declined to go into detail on what efforts are being made toward that end.
