UNC’s Pinson to miss Saturday’s game at Miami

The youthful men’s diving team faces a formidable threat in North Carolina’s Jack Nyquist.

The North Carolina Tar Heels’ game against the Virginia Tech Hokies went mostly as expected: The bigger, longer Heels absolutely dominated the Hokies on the boards, and that, along with some extremely hot shooting, allowed the Heels to coast to victory after a back-and-forth start.

Normally, UNC averages 7.3 made 3-pointers per game, but the Tar Heels tallied eight in the first half.

Now the Tar Heels lead the conference at 7-1, Miami has fallen to 3-4 in league play and limp in with a 13-6 record.

The UM women (15-5, 4-4 ACC) return to the Watsco Center Sunday at 1 p.m. against Boston College. The Tar Heels are 19-3 overall and they’ve piled up seven consecutive wins. “Coach always talks about those things, so we’ve got to pay attention to those and do what he says”.

By the 12-minute mark, North Carolina had matched it season high of 12 3s.

Berry found another opportunity a few minutes later, breaking free of the Virginia Tech player guarding him to sink another three. Miami is one of the teams in the ACC that can match up with UNC’s size, and the Hurricanes are a good rebounding team – though nobody in the country has been better at rebounding than the Tar Heels. “Rebounding was again big for us”.

“Our toughness really got us through that one”, Allen told reporters after the Clemson win. “As far as the numbers that we pay attention to, relative to the complexion of our roster, we thought that was best”.

“I want to turn people over, but I want to hold them to a low (field goal) percentage, and that’s hard to do because you can’t turn people over unless you gamble”, Williams said.

Ninth-ranked North Carolina won’t have swingman Theo Pinson for Saturday’s game at Miami because of an ankle injury. “I don’t think anybody should ever have to play two games in three days and both of them on the road, and several of the schools in our league have to do that”. Jackson hit the final two of that sequence, while Berry had three 3s before that. UNC pulled down 19 offensive rebounds, 16 of which came in the first half.

Tech opened the evening looking like it was poised to hang with UNC, running the floor in the first 4 1/2 minutes and knocking down perimeter shots while building a 13-7 lead.

Pinson missed the Tar Heels’ first 16 games after having surgery to fix a broken bone in his right foot.

This is far from time to panic for Virginia Tech.

– Virginia Tech coach Buzz Williams will have to wait for his 200th career coaching victory.

UNC’s six turnovers were also its fewest against an ACC foe this season.
