Uncredited writer Tony Gilroy “empowered to take the lead” on Rogue One

One of the last major franchise films to debut in 2016 also happens to be one of the most highly anticipated: Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

On Monday evening, the first television spot for Rogue One – titled “Rebellion” – began making the rounds, despite presenting no new information.

However, according to Deadline’s Mike Fleming, there has been chatter that it was actually Tony Gilroy orchestrating the Rogue One reshoots in lieu of Gareth Edwards.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is shaping up to be less of a Garth Edwards movie and more of an Edwards And production. We’ve told you about the 50 scripts for Star Wars Underworld created before Disney acquired the IP, but in all likelihood a future ABC series would be a completely new adventure. Kennedy may have been involved somewhat vicariously in the Bourne movie because of her husband, and consequently gotten to know Gilroy and his skills as a writer and director.

Disney hasn’t commented on the report.

Now, that sounds like the studio asked Gilroy to come aboard because it was dissatisfied with an early cut from Edwards.

And none of these developments is likely to spell doom for Rogue One, which is expected to be one of the year’s biggest hits. Previously, Gilroy was brought in to help Edwards with 2014’s Godzilla. It’s a tricky thing in Star Wars because now we have so many things going on across so many platforms.
