Undefeated no more: No. 19 Houston loses on the road to UConn

The Houston Cougars suffered their first loss of the season today, a 20-17 setback to CT At halftime, UH quarterback Kyle Postma, who is playing for the injured Greg Ward, Jr., was 6 of 11 for 72 yards. Heisman hopeful Greg Ward Jr. rolled his left ankle against Memphis and is likely to be a game-time decision on Saturday. UConn, though, has a ball-hawking defense that has come up with 15 interceptions this season, six of them from sophomore cornerback Jamar Summers, including one that he returned 67-yards for a touchdown against Tulane. A win Saturday or on November 28 at Temple would make the Huskies bowl eligible for the first time since 2010…. Houston is still undefeated. CT was able to gain only 227 yards of total offensive but their defense came up big allowing the Tulane to gain just 140 yards. But Postma, who engineered Houston’s come-from-behind win over Memphis last week, could not repeat the feat against UConn.

Next up for Houston is next Saturday against Navy for the conference’s Western Division title and a spot in the December 5 AAC championship game.

The Cougars offense was ineffective by their standards, gaining just 318 total yards on the night. Noel Thomas caught two touchdown passes a 5-yarder from Shirreffs in the first quarter and a 45-yarder when Boyle threw the ball to Anderson who lofted the deep scoring pass to Thomas in the fourth quarter. “So to have an opportunity to play a great team this week on senior day, I guess you could say that it is a storybook ending”.

The Cougars (10-1, 6-1, No. 19 CFP) responded immediately, with Brandon Wilson returning the ensuing kickoff 94 yards to make it 20-17. Running back Arkeel Newsome had 114 yards on 32 carries. Kenneth Farrow has 26 yards rushing to lead UH on the ground. CB William Jackson, a top National Football League prospect, has been cleared to play after missing last week’s game.

Newsome carried the ball 42 yards straight up the middle on the first play of the game and rushed for 68 yards during the opening drive.

The Huskies were also led by their backup quarterback, Tim Boyle, after a late helmet-to-helmet hit by senior linebacker Elandon Roberts knocked their starter Bryant Shirreffs out of the game. The teams traded field goals in the second quarter.
