The preliminary unemployment rate for March is the lowest since 1976, when current record-keeping began.

The statewide unemployment rate is seasonally adjusted to eliminate the influences of weather, holidays, the opening and closing of schools and other recurring seasonal events from an economic time series.

The unemployment rate compared favorably to the 5.7 percent posted in March 2017. The count has nothing to do with eligibility for unemployment insurance.

But these gains were offset by net drops in transportation/warehousing/utilities (down 3,100 jobs) and retail trade (down 2,500).

Jan Roeser, a regional economist with the Idaho Department of Labor, said this is good news, but there are some catches.

Even so, the state’s unemployment rate was up slightly in March, rising to 3.8 percent from its historic low of 3.7 in February.

Massachusetts’ labor force increased by 14,200 from 3,669,500 in February. There were 45,960 people employed, 743 more than February. Idaho’s labor force participation rate held steady at 64 percent for the third consecutive month.

The biggest dip came in Sussex County were the non-seasonally adjusted jobless rate fell from 5.0 to 4.5 percent.

Professional and business services added 200 new workers. Professional services, professional services and government jobs posted losses in the month. “Employment increased by 2,800 over the year, because of growth in the identical industries”, the department said.
