Unemployment rates fall in 29 states in August amid widespread job gains
Oil field employment was flat, leaving the industry with an even 10,000 workers in Kern, which the EDD said was 2,500, or 20 percent, fewer than it employed in August 2014.

California’s unemployment rate dropped to 6.1 percent in August, slightly down from 6.2 percent in July. The rate fell below 5 percent for 30 consecutive months from January 1999 to June 2001.
The state says the rate was tied for the third lowest in the country and it was the 11th consecutive month without an increase in the state’s unemployment rate. The numbers are based on federal and state surveys of employers and households, but don’t take into account people who have stopped looking for work. Jobs in the professional, scientific and technical services sectors accounted for more than 80 percent of job growth in the business sector. Hughson had an August rate of 12.3 percent, a decrease from the 13.5 percent recorded in July. Most sectors dropped, although government, information and education and health care services saw increases. The largest over-the-month increases in employment occurred in California (+36,200), Florida (+19,600), and Ohio (+14,600). The mining and logging sector, which includes oil and gas production, was down by 1,000 jobs.
Mississippi remained above the national average for unemployment, tying for the fifth-highest jobless rate among states. That’s down from 4.7 percent in July.
The employment rate in Flathead County was 4.8 percent last month. He said more than 75,000 jobs were posted on the site in August.
So the unemployment rate can fall not only if there are more people working, but if there is a shrinking pool of workers.
The national unemployment rate is 5.1%.
