UNESCO DG calls for investigation into death of journalist Akshay Singh

“Our job is to investigate and submit our reports to the court, and that we will do to the satisfaction of the court”, CBI director Anil Sinha said. More than 2000 people have so far been arrested in connection with the scam, including the State’s former education minister Laxmikant Sharma, several Vyapam officials, bureaucrats, middlemen, students and their parents.

Sources said, “The PE has been registered to examine whether these deaths (nine) were fallout of the Vyapam scam”.

“All I have to share are treatment papers, ” her brother Arunendu told The Sunday Express, saying that he had no idea why her death was being treated as suspicious.

Following the Supreme Court’s order to take over the STF probe, a 40-member CBI team reached Bhopal from New Delhi on July 13.

“We will investigate the cases in the manner that has been mandated by the Supreme Court”.

At the outset of the hearing, counsel Kapil Sibal, appearing for petitioner Ashish Kumar Chaturvedi, urged the court to hand over the probe to the CBI as things were not moving. A resident of Uttampura in Morena, his kidney cancer was detected two years before his death. The police claim to have even recreated the crime scene after the initial inquiry and said that Damor had died due to falling off a train.

Additional Solicitor General (ASG) Maninder Singh, appearing for CBI, said that the transfer of more than 185 Vyapam scam cases from SIT to CBI will take time and the state investigating agency be allowed to file charge sheets in the cases in which the probe is complete.

There was never any clarity on whether it was a case of murder or suicide.

In one of the cases, doctors who conducted a post-mortem examination on Namrata Damor, one of the accused in the scam, who was founded in 2012 on railway tracks in Ujjain district, said it appeared to be a case of murder.

Namrata’s case came back under spotlight after the sudden death of India Today TV journalist Akshay Singh in Jhabua recently. Another case was registered which pertains to illegalities in the Pre-Medical Test of MP 2010, while a third registered case related to illegalities in the Pre-Medical Test entrance examination conducted by Vyapam in 2010.
