Unfamiliar waters for Phelps: captain of US men’s swim team

For the first time, the Baltimore native was voted one of six USA swim team captains in the Olympic Games. Ervin won a gold medal at the 2000 Olympics before retiring for a decade. Beisel and Schmitt are three-time Olympians; Adams is a two-time Olympian.

Olympic swimmer Allison Schmitt has a new role heading into the Summer Games in Rio de Janiero, team captain.

Serving as men’s captains will be Nathan Adrian (Bremerton, Wash./California Aquatics), Anthony Ervin (Valencia, Calif./SwimMAC Carolina/California Aquatics) and Michael Phelps (Baltimore, Md./North Baltimore Aquatic Club).

North Kingstown native and U.S. Olympian Elizabeth Beisel has received a special honor as she gets ready to take part in her third Summer Games.

At 31 years old, Phelps will only be competing in three individual events, but according to Zaccardi, he could be on an additional three relay teams in Rio.

While Phelps’ career has earned him almost every accolade available to a swimmer, team captain has never been one until this year – further highlighting the observed change since an arrest and stint in rehab in 2014. “That’s how I’ve looked at every meet that I’ve ever gone to”.
