Unicode Consortium accepts Apple’s request; adds 5 new gender diverse professional emojis
As a result of Unicode Consortium’s approval to Apple’s recommendation, the “Emoji ZWJ Sequence: Gendered Role, with object” list now includes the following male and female professionals — Health Worker, Farmer, Teacher, Student, Singer, Cook, Factory Worker, Office Worker, Mechanic, Scientist, Technologist, Astronaut, Artist, Judge, Pilot, and Firefighter.

According to Emojipedia, Unicode Version 4.0 is set to be released in November. Some of those changes were replacing the handgun emoji with a squirt gun and releasing more female versions of sports- and job-related icons before the 4.0 update got finalized, notes The Verge. Individual members who are responsible for developing, reviewing and maintaining the standards are also part of it.
Apple has requested male and female versions of five new professions, which it would like added as part of the next Unicode update.
Apple also shares a mockup of what each proposed emoji would look like with the iOS 10 style applied, as well as other examples. Apple is hoping that artists, firefighters, pilots, astronauts, and judges will be better represented with the addition of these new emoji. The company also provided fallback examples on how the professions can be conveyed through now available emoji, such as the astronaut represented by the emoji of a man or woman followed by a rocket ship. The review period for Emoji 4.0 closes in another two months and users can submit feedback directly to Unicode.

Apple will be adding 100 new emojis to the upcoming version of its mobile operating system, iOS 10, but it seems that the company is still looking to add more to that number.
