Metro Transit Police tweeted that their K-9 units had been assisting Amtrak police with the investigation of a package in the Amtrak portion of the station. However, it appears police only investigated a suspicious package report.

Metro service was unaffected, Metro officials said.

Thousands of commuters and train passengers were waiting outside the station amid a swarm of police cars.

All rail service in and out of Union Station were being held, according to MARC and VRE. “We wouldn’t let you back in if it wasn’t all clear”, said a police officer, who did not give his name.
