Unite calls for mandatory re-selection of labour mps

If ever brought into force it would place a huge amount of power into the hands of the party’s new £3 members, many of whom are Corbynites who defected from radically more left-wing movements to join Labour in support of its leader.

The move came as the party confirmed that the victor of the leadership contest triggered by challenges to Mr Corbyn from Angela Eagle and Owen Smith would be announced on September 24.

But Mr Corbyn has a net rating of +2, with 45 per cent saying they disagree that he has what is needed for No10.

Telford branch chairman Kevin Guy said Mr Corbyn was the overwhelming choice of members in the south of the borough – and added that he expected the north branch to follow suit in a vote on Friday.

Just imagine how terrified of democracy these Labour Party right-wingers must be that they’d exclude 130,000 Labour Party members from voting and actively deter people from becoming members of the party during the biggest surge in membership the party has ever experienced.

“Ideally, we would have one candidate, and the clarity of that one candidate versus Jeremy Corbyn“, he said. I would probably expect it to go the same way.

Many are thought to have reacted to calls from its leader, Len McCluskey, to stop what he has called an anti-democratic coup against Corbyn.

Speaking in his Pontypridd constituency, Mr Smith will say: “This is a moment of deep peril for Labour, if we carry on as we are the party I love will end up in a disastrous spilt”.

“I am confident that Jeremy will win through”.

Last week Jeremy Corbyn accused Mr Blair of misleading Parliament when he took Britain into the war with Iraq in 2003. He served as Shadow Work and Pensions Secretary under Mr Corbyn until last month. Mr Corbyn had made clear that violence and bullying “should not be part of our politics” and any Labour member found responsible for such actions would be expelled, he said.

Mr Hadfield said he did not yet know the reason for the local party’s suspension.

The leadership candidate said many Leave voters now regret their decision and are angry after being “clearly misled” by the Brexit campaign. I am not prepared to let that happen.

“This Sunday will be primarily about getting the basic plans down for the campaign over the summer but we will have some speakers and they will put out some challenges we hope that, for the good of the Labour Party, Jeremy’s opponents would sign up to: a promise to abide by the result and to serve in Jeremy’s team if asked, for example”.
