Defeating Islamic State, pushing Iranian influence out of Syria, and the ouster of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad are priorities for Washington, Haley said in an interview on CNN’s “State of the Union” which will air in full on Sunday.

On Friday, the United States carried out missile strikes on a Syrian air base it says is suspected of storing chemical weapons.

The retaliatory USA cruise missile strikes on Friday on a Syrian airbase were “understandable”, Gabriel commented.

After previous gas attacks in Syria which the West blamed on the Assad regime, Mr Putin made a deal with former-President Barack Obama to scrap Syria’s arsenal of deadly chemical weapons.

Russian and Iranian presidents in a phone conversation stressed the inadmissibility of “aggressive” US actions against Syria in violation of global law, the Kremlin said in a statement issued on Sunday.

U.S. secretary of state Rex Tillerson warned that the USA military strike on Syria is a message to other nations, as USA war ships headed towards waters near North Korea in a sign of escalating tensions between the two countries.

Johnson was to visit Moscow on Monday, a main ally of the Syrian regime headed by President Bashar al-Assad. This was also the site of chemical attacks believed to have been carried out by the Syrian government, in 2013, that killed hundreds. “If we would want to appeal rationally to Russia”, McMaster said.

At least 86 people died in Tuesday’s attack on the northwestern town of Khan Sheikhoun, which left hundreds choking, fidgeting or foaming at the mouth.

The Assad regime has fiercely denied conducting the chemical strikes. “By proxy Russian Federation is responsible for every civilian death last week”, Sir Michael wrote.

The defence secretary said Moscow must be part of the solution to ending the “needless suffering” of Syrian civilians.

Almost 80 people died in Khan Sheikhoun town in the rebel-held northern province of Idlib on 4 April after Syrian planes allegedly carried out gas attacks, which the USA said was the banned nerve agent sarin. “You train the opposition to go after [Syrian President Bashar] Assad”.

British Defence Secretary Michael Fallon criticised Russia’s support of Assad, describing the chemical attack as a war crime that happened “on their watch”.

Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani has said “terrorists are celebrating” the United States strikes on the air base.
