By convention the Queen is above party politics and does not personally choose the prime minister, so Mr Cameron’s last duty was to advise her to invite Theresa May to form the next administration.

British Home Secretary Theresa May waves as she arrives July 12 to attend the last Cabinet meeting hosted by British Prime Minister David Cameron.

May stood in front of the iconic door of No. 10 with her husband, Philip, as the 13th prime minister of the queen’s reign and the first woman to hold the job since fellow Conservative Margaret Thatcher served from 1979 to 1990. “Florence – you once climbed into one, before a foreign trip, and said “take me with you”, he said.

She said: “In David Cameron, I follow in the footsteps of a great modern Prime Minister”.

He answered questions in the House of Commons for the last time highlighting his record as prime minister.

“Based on the public comments we’ve seen from the incoming prime minister, she intends to pursue a course that’s consistent with the course that President Obama has offered”, White House spokesman Josh Earnest said at a news briefing.

Ms May’s elevation to the country’s most senior political role, at the age of 59, completes a whirlwind rise which was triggered by the unexpected referendum vote for “Brexit” on June 23 which brought down predecessor David Cameron.

Before leaving Downing Street, Cameron said being Prime Minister had been “the greatest honour” of his life. “It will ensure confidence among those in the party who did campaign to leave that they have a champion who believes in what they campaigned for”.

Mr Key said he hoped to talk to the new leader in the coming days, and he also wished the best for Mr Cameron whom he said had become a very good friend.

“I have experienced a man who is serious, who is a fan of no-nonsense policy and who was delivering at each and every moment when things started to become serious”, Juncker said.

He ended by referring to a jibe he directed at then-Prime Minister Tony Blair more than a decade ago: “He was the future once”.

Standing outside her new home in Downing Street, the Conservative PM vowed to protect “ordinary working-class families” and help everyone achieve their dreams no matter their background.

She won the Conservative leadership election after her final rival dropped out, and has gone to the palace to formally assume the office of PM.
