But she sprung a surprise by appointing Mr. Johnson, the former Mayor of London who had appeared consigned to the political wilderness after backing out of the Conservative leadership contest.
Amber Rudd, the government’s energy and climate change secretary, has succeeded May as home secretary.
German chancellor Angela Merkel, French president Francois Hollande and Italian prime minister Matteo Renzi are meeting in late August to discuss Brexit.
The new Chancellor said the vote to quit the European Union has had a chilling effect on the British economy but there will be “no emergency budget”.
May stressed her commitment to delivering Brexit but “explained that we would need some time to prepare for these negotiations and spoke of her hope that these could be conducted in a constructive and positive spirit”, a Downing Street spokeswoman said. Her new cabinet, full of those who led the Brexit charge, reflects her new priorities.
Gove supporter Nicky Morgan said she left her post as education secretary on Thursday.
Hammond was the first cabinet member to be announced by May, naming him as her next door neighbour at 11 Downing Street.
“The first and the biggest problem for the new Prime Minister I think is to first restore the reputation of Britain which has seriously been damaged in the last weeks in the world”, British journalist Sam Miller told NDTV.
However, Liberal Democrat leader Tim Farron predicted Mr Johnson would “spend more time apologising to nations he’s offended” than working as foreign secretary.
Her day started at Buckingham Palace with an audience with Queen Elizabeth, who accepted David Cameron’s resignation and invited her to form a new government.
“The government I lead will be driven not by the interests of the privileged few, but by yours”. If you’re from an ordinary working class family, life is much harder than many people in Westminster realise.
May also made a reference to the Conservative party’s complete name, which is the Conservative and Unionist Party, saying the word “unionist” was very important to her as it highlights the “precious, precious bond” between all parts of the United Kingdom – England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
He also thanked his wife Samantha for her support.
Just 90 minutes later May strolled into Downing Street with husband Philip.
