British police have arrested a 22-year-old man living in northern London in connection with the online threat that sparked a five-hour lockdown at Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, Ont., on Friday. The lockdown has since been lifted.
According to Laurier officials, the school received a tip from the Federal Bureau of Investigation after a threat against the school’s science building was detected on the online message board site 4chan.org. Police said the wording was similar to that of a similar online threat that preceded a deadly October. 1 shooting at a campus in Oregon. Police were notified immediately, and they were able to confirm the threat which prompted the response.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Waterloo Regional Police Service at 519-653-7700 extension 6399.
Dr. Max Blouw, President and Vice-Chancellor, of Wilfrid Laurier University says the school took an inventory of all on-campus students before announcing the lockdown.
