United Kingdom opposition leader Corbyn wins fight to defend position
“And I am determined to win it”.

On Tuesday evening the National Executive Committee voted by 18-14 that Corbyn would automatically be on the ballot – which is lucky for him as there is a good chance he would not have secured the necessary MP votes otherwise.
Reacting to the vote on Tuesday night, Ms Eagle said: “I’m glad the NEC has come to a conclusion”.
He says the party’s governing body should allow him to join the contest because he’s now in the job.
British Labour Shadow Secretary of State for Business, Angela Eagle arrives at the launch of her leadership campaign in London.
THE future of the Welsh Labour party could hinge on what happens with Jeremy Corbyn.
But the ruling will come as a major blow to the majority of Labour’s MPs who are desperate to overthrow the party leader.
Labour-commissioned analysis said Mr Corbyn will need nominations from MPs to stand again.
Mr Corbyn is preparing to deliver a speech to the Unite union in Brighton over whether he should automatically take part in the upcoming Labour leadership race.
Speaking today, former shadow education secretary Ms Powell – who quit her role alongside more than 60 others in protest at Mr Corbyn’s leadership – said he could be beaten regardless.
“All other leadership candidates will require nominations from 20 percent of the PLP and EPLP”, the spokesperson added.
Mr Drew said: “The meeting was overwhelming”.
The peer, who was Labour’s general secretary in 2010, told Radio 4’s World at One the rule was created to ensure any elected leader had significant support among the parliamentary party.
However, there was also a setback for Mr Corbyn as the NEC changed some rules for the contest, so people can only vote if they have been a member for at least six months.
The NEC decided the incumbent leader would not have to gather 51 nominations from Labour MPs and MEPs.
Registered supporter status, which gives people a one-off vote if they pay a fee, will cost £25 this time round instead of the £3 payment that saw thousands of Mr Corbyn’s supporters sign up in the run-up to last September’s vote.
Angela Eagle is presenting her candidacy on Monday.
An official from the party said: “It’s probably fair to say that the majority of the Labour members in Stroud back Jeremy Corbyn”.

Just six minutes before McNicol made his announcement, Trickett, who Corbyn has tasked with preparing Labour to win the next election, released a separate statement responding to the decision of Energy Minister Andrea Leadsom to pull out of the Conservative leadership race, making it nearly certain that Home Secretary Theresa May would take over from outgoing Prime Minister David Cameron within days.
