The ratification by the countries, which account for 48 per cent of emissions, was just seven per cent shy of the threshold of 55 per cent that is required to bring into force the Paris Agreement on climate change. Some of the world’s major economies have already ratified the Paris deal. “The Paris Agreement gives us a framework to act, but only if we scale up our ambition”, he stated. “We need 26 countries more countries equaling 15% of global emissions for entry into force”, he stated.

As of today, 60 countries have ratified the agreement, but they only represent 46 out of the necessary 55 per cent of global emissions.
The joint statement noted that by ratifying the Agreement, Singapore has formalised its pledge to reduce its Emissions Intensity by 36 per cent from 2005 levels by 2030 and to stabilise emissions with the aim of peaking around 2030.
If all agree and the plan is endorsed by the European Parliament, the EU could ratify the deal by early October.
Currently, there are 185 signatories to the Paris Agreement.

The Paris Agreement would, for the first time, commit all countries, from tiny Fiji to major powers like China and the USA – the world’s largest greenhouse gas emitters – to cut emissions and take measures to adapt to climate change impacts.
