New vehicle sales grew by 3.3% in August compared with the same month a year ago, according to industry figures.

Many analysts had expected registrations to fall after the uncertainty caused by the referendum vote to leave the European Union, but the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) reported an increase of 3.3% registrations in August 2016, to 81,640. This brings the total up to 1.68 million new vehicle registrations in the first eight months of the year, up 2.8 per cent compared to the first eight months in 2015. “With showrooms full of exciting models featuring the very latest technology and a raft of affordable finance options, it still makes economic sense to consider buying a new vehicle”, said Mike Hawes, SMMT chief executive.

Year-to-date figures see steady growth, up 2.9% with 231,857 registrations so far in 2016.

British auto sales rose by 3.3 percent in August compared with the same month a year ago, recovering from a flat performance in July shortly after Britons voted to leave the European Union in June.
