Muhren, who spent three years at United during the 1980s, was asked by Omnisport if Van Gaal should resign, and the Dutchman said: “Yeah…but he says he doesn’t want to do that”.

Sean Bones, vice-chairman of the United Supporters’ Trust, reckons the club have slumped to a new low and that those above Van Gaal are now to blame.

Louis van Gaal, Manchester United manager put his side’s 2-1 defeat by FC Midtjylland down to Murphy’s law.

Perhaps the reality is that Van Gaal knows Manchester United is not good enough to win the Europa League and has decided the sooner they exit the better.

United lost 2-1 in Denmark, despite taking the lead through Memphis Depay.

Columnists at the Manchester Evening News described the defeat as a “new low” and called for Van Gaal to be sacked, while many irate fans took to Twitter.

Should the club miss out on qualification for the Champions League, number of player’s wages will be cut due to a policy started back in 2012, according to the Daily Mirror. The Portuguese hinted he has several options for his next job in management.

He was linked with a return to Inter Milan this week but soothed any United concerns by saying: “Let me make it clear…I will not be Inter manager next season”. It’s been a few years since we won a trophy. However, the ex-Netherlands coach revealed he has the backing of the club’s board. “I’m not looking for a club, but there are clubs that are looking for me”.

“They’ve stuck with us and travelled to support us so I can only apologise”. We have seen that in the 18 months I am here.

But Carrick stressed: “I don’t think you can use injuries as an excuse”.

Van Gaal accepted the second-half performance was not good enough, but defended the attitude of his players. “In terms of that, we’ve probably got off quite lightly and the manager has taken a lot of it”.

United need to get their feet back and here is a 5-point-plan to get them going in the right direction.

Worse was to come when the second-half substitute Paul Onuachu scored a 77th-minute victor to give Jess Thorup’s side the advantage before next week’s second leg at Old Trafford. “We have to pick ourselves up and go again – there’s no other way”.
