United not as strong without Rooney – Hughes
Leicester City were given a reality check when the unlikely leaders lost 1-0 at Liverpool yesterday while Manchester United slumped to a third straight Premier League defeat to pile the pressure on Louis van Gaal.

Bojan Krkic and Marko Arnautovic were both on target in the first half as Mark Hughes’ Stoke ensured former club United equalled a dismal run Charlton was a part of as a player.
“That is something I discuss with [executive vice-chairman] Ed Woodward not you”, Van Gaal told a media conference after the game.
The biggest indictment of the malaise afflicting England’s biggest club was Van Gaal’s belief that his expensively-assembled team ‘did not dare to play football in the first half’. “I have tried to do everything but the pressure shall be higher and higher with every match”, he said after the Stoke game. That is the problem now. “I have to deal with that, but much more important is that the players have to deal with that because they have to perform”.
After dominating the first 45 minutes, United forced Stoke to defend resolutely in the second half, although they did threaten on the break.
“You can say I failed in my job because they could not cope but in the end the players must do that for themselves”.
The 2-0 loss at the windy Britannia Stadium pushed United down to sixth place in the English Premier League, and Van Gaal is sensing the pressure after barely 18 months in charge.
Manchester United lost their fourth game in a row as Stoke City secured a 2-0 win, and Michael Carrick admits the squad is hurting.
“Where are the likes of [Javier] Hernandez – people in the past like Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who come off the bench to sparkle or to bring us back into the game?”
Van Gaal replaced Depay with Rooney at halftime, but United could not reduce the deficit. “I feel the support of everyone”. “It is very hard to do that in just two days but we shall try”.
That it was the same scoreline after 90 minutes even after the introduction of Rooney in the second half, will probably seal his fate as Manchester United manager.

Memphis Depay got the visitors in trouble in the 19th minute when his header back to goalkeeper David De Gea fell far short and was intercepted by Glen Johnson, who set up Spanish striker Bojan for the opening goal at Britannia Stadium in Stoke-on-Trent.
