United old boys put the boot in after Champions League exit

“We are better than a year ago”. After 79 minutes, City was losing 2-1, only for Raheem Sterling to score twice in 112 seconds to put his team ahead by the 81st.

With the win, Wolfsburg have finished at the top-spot in the group B of the standings.

Condemnation has been rife ever since the final whistle rang around the Volkswagen Arena to seal United’s fate, with ex-players and fans alike taking the opportunity to voice their embarrassment, their displeasure and, in some altogether more melodramatic corners, their wont to see Louis van Gaal do the decent thing and resign his post. Also the winning goal was two minutes after we had equalised, so we had the chance to win I think.

“We should have defended better, been more tight and more aggressive”.

“I would like to come back in a club with a good project, but, of course, one that is competitive”, he said. It’s the highest podium and you can’t do that.

Van Gaal said reaching the group stage, progressing further in the Capital One Cup and sitting fourth in the Premier League showed their improvement.

Michael Carrick, who was expected to start in a deeper role alongside Bastian Schweinsteiger, started the match on the bench with Marouane Fellaini selected to play in a more advanced role.

“I have changed [substituted] him”.

“But we now have to forget this disappointment, pick ourselves up very quickly and focus on the next game”. We’re all human beings and he is just a human being.

A lack of goals has been the biggest issue for many fans of Van Gaal’s side, with chants of “attack” becoming more commonplace at Old Trafford.

Scholes alluded to the fact that if he was in the current United lineup, he would be explaining to the younger players where he would want them on the pitch and help coach them through games rather that let them make the same mistakes over and over again. “You’d expect for that kind of money at least four or five world-class players in the squad”.

United just look like an average team and with an average team, you are going to get average performances.

“Before Van Gaal talks about improvements, he needs to own up to mistakes that have been made, too”.

Scholes believes the United boss will be under pressure now, and described the current United team as “average”.

“There was no urgency, no threat and no quality”, the former midfielder added.

A chuckling Paul Scholes, meanwhile, who had also berated his old team, using words such as “average”, had to wipe away a tear – presumably because the thought of United being on the same level as Liverpool is just so ridiculous. When you firstly give the goal and then when a few players come and say to you, you change your mind, it is odd in my opinion.
