Staff were understood to have raised concerns over the pilots’ behaviour before the Air Transat A310, carrying up to 250 passengers on board, was due to depart from Glasgow to Toronto.

According to the Daily Record, flight UA162 was grounded and the pair were held over the weekend at a police station close to the airport.

Two US pilots have been arrested at Glasgow Airport over claims they were about to fly a transatlantic passenger plane while drunk. The Police Service of Scotland says both men are expected to be arraigned Monday at a court in Paisley, a Glasgow suburb, to face charges connected to Britain’s transport safety laws.

The regulation states that a pilot preparing to fly or flying can not exceed a.02 Blood Alcohol Level, but authorities did not say what the two fliers registered.

There were 141 passengers on board the 9 a.m. flight who were rebooked to a 7:15 p.m. flight with a new crew later in the evening.

United Airlines said the pilots, both believed to be USA citizens, had been removed from service and their flying duties pending an investigation. We are cooperating with the authorities and will conduct our own investigation as well.

United Airlines said the safety of their customers and crew “is their highest priority”. Among them was an incident a year ago in which a man was arrested and jailed after flying an executive jet from Spain to Norwich, England.
