United players are fighting for their futures too, says Smalling
Van Gaal faced the sack if United had lost.

But sixth placed United, without a win in eight games in all competitions, still failed to score at home for sixth time this season – leaving them five points off the top four and their manager still on borrowed time.
Manchester United’s Chris Smalling says the players are all out to show that they are a good team.
“So, I think they should stick with it. They don’t want to become a club which continuously changes their manager”.
Moyes was sacked by United in April 2014 with the club seventh in the Premier League with four games of the league season remaining.
The top spot was seized by Arsenal on Monday as they routed Bournemouth, with a stellar performance by Mesut Ozil who provided an assist to Brazilian Gabriel Paulista for the first goal and scored one himself to clinch the game 2-0. “It was a rebuilding job at Manchester United”, Moyes said in an interview on the Clare Balding Show which will be aired on New Year’s Eve. He was great in goals – as a 16 year old boy he would be diving about in front of the goals – he was mad at that time, but you look at the way he has matured, he is England captain, Manchester United captain.
And 16 months on, it is clear the former Everton manager is still unhappy about how his reign at Old Trafford ended. I was under that illusion when I was there.
“For me, it [his future]is not an interesting subject because I cannot have any influence on that, I can only work with my players and you can see they are fighting for me”.
“Would I take the job again?”
He added: “Of course I would”.
“Inside the club the players are willing to fight for every metre, the manager is willing to fight, the members of staff are willing to fight and the board is very confident in the staff and the manager so it is not inside Manchester United”.
“I don’t think I would have ever said that in my lifetime”.
He said: “With Van Gaal I could achieve a lot”.
Moyes is still smarting from his sacking, it appears.
“We hit the post twice when the keeper was beaten, had a big chance in the second half and two penalty cases…so we are forcing the luck but don’t have the luck we need”, explained Van Gaal.

However, Smalling does not believe his manager was on the verge of resignation and said he saw no change in his mood, despite the poor results of late.
