“We are happy that the Supreme Court’s division bench has upheld our decision”.
The apex court, while upholding the Kerala High Court’s March 31 ruling on the issue, dismissed a batch of petitions filed by hotel bars association challenging the state government’s new excise policy which confines bar licences only to five-star hotels.
The court assembled specially on Tuesday to deliver six verdicts, including the one on the Kerala liquor ban, as Sen retires on Wednesday.
Reacting to the new development, Unni said the government will now decide how and what to do next.
Meantime, Elegance bar owner Binoy said there are chances to prove the allegations levelled by bar association working president Biju Ramesh. Added a hotel industry veteran: “The verdict will have a make or break impact on the tourism/hotel industry (which have been badly affected by the liquor policy)”.
The apex court verdict on the Kerala liquor policy which seeks to take away from the common man the means to buy liquor at the bars may have bearing on attempts by Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar to curb the sale of liquor in his state in a phased manner. Liquor would not be available in local bars and shops.
