“US forces conducted two strikes in Sangin on December 23 against threats to the force”, a spokesman for the military coalition said.

MASOOM STANEKZAI, Acting Defense Minister, Afghanistan: When the USA and the British forces were there, how many enablers they had, how many jets they had, how many helicopters they had, and how many we have today?
SUNE ENGEL RASMUSSEN: Fighting has gone back and forth, and on Wednesday night local time, the Taliban managed to seize control of the government compound for four to five hours.
Sangin is an important prize for the Taliban.
How successful have the Taliban been in recent months?
The soldiers were targeted as they moved through a village near Bagram Airfield, the largest USA military facility in Afghanistan, NATO and Afghan officials said.
Helmand, a longstanding Taliban stronghold and the source of most of the opium that helps fund the movement, has always been hard to control.
Government forces have complained bitterly of inadequate supplies and reinforcements and little of the air power that backed up North Atlantic Treaty Organisation forces when they fought in the region.
According to reports, a spokesman said Helmand is not only the province where Taliban have made gains.
The turmoil in Helmand, the deadliest province for British and USA forces in Afghanistan over the past decade, underscores a rapidly unravelling security situation in Afghanistan.
President Ashraf Ghani’s awkward National Unity Government, formed after last year’s inconclusive election, has left key positions unfilled or allowed local politicians to dictate security appointments.
Shadi Khan, a tribal elder in Sangin who is also director of the Sangin District Council, said he was trapped in the Sangin army base for three days before government forces arrived.
“Taliban rumours that they have captured the district are not true”, he said.
The announcement in July that the Taliban founder and leader, Mullah Mohammad Omar, had been dead for more than two years saw the group pull out of a dialogue process after only one meeting in Pakistan between representatives of each side.
“The liberation of dear Mosul will be achieved with the cooperation and unity of all Iraqis after the victory in Ramadi”, Abadi said in a statement on the state media website on Friday.

The troops, the British Ministry of Defence said in a statement, were “part of the UK’s ongoing contribution to NATO’s Resolute Support Mission”, the training, advisory, assistance and counterterror mission in Afghanistan.
