United States boxer Roy Jones becomes Russian citizen

The athlete submitted an official petition about the citizenship on August 20.

Former multi-division world boxing champion and pound for pound king Roy Jones Jr is now a Russian and has proudly shown his new Russian passport which he received at during a ceremony in Moscow, yesterday. Putin agreed to assist if the boxer connects his future life with Russian Federation. He is happy to have the possibility to come to Russia as a Russian citizen.

Jones remarked that it “feels nothing better than to be a citizen of both the US and Russia” and added, “this is definitely something that was ordained by God and not myself, “ even as he wanted to encourage other people to go to Russian Federation “because Russia is good and the people of Russian Federation are good.”.

Following Jones’ meeting with Putin in Crimea, Ukraine placed the fighter on a blacklist of “traitors”, “separatists” and “terrorists”.

The allies were set to discuss “the key aspects of anti-terrorism activity on the territory of [Commonwealth of Independent States] countries and issues of countering terrorist organizations and groups that have been trained in Syria and Afghanistan”, said one Kremlin spokesperson, as reported by Tass, a state-owned news agency.

Jones, a native of Pensacola, Florida, represented the United States at the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, where he won a silver medal after a highly disputed loss to Park Si-Hun in a light middleweight final that saw him land almost three times as many punches as his opponent.

In professional boxing he scored 62 wins, including 45 knockouts, and lost eight fights.
