Morgan has looked like a reinvigorated player all tournament, and the goals started pouring in Friday as she notched a hat trick – bringing her total to six goals in five games this year. She was limping noticeably and was taken out of the game by head coach John Herdman in the 2nd half. “I was hoping that once we went up by a couple of goals they would come at us, that they would press us, and I would be more involved in the game”, Solo said.

The Canadians began to stroke the ball around after the goal and Costa Rica was pinned back in its own end for most of the half. “So we’re in a good rhythm in that sense”.

That included Sinclair and McLeod, who both have gone through modified training routines at the tournament to ensure they were ready when it counted. “I think it’s one of those things you dream about and in a game like tonight I’ll take it”. The United States won the title with a 5-2 victory over Japan in the final.

The U.S. vs. Canada finale here on Sunday may seem a bit like an afterthought, given the relief both North American sides expressed after their clinching wins in the semis. After scoring in her senior team debut in December, Pugh not only made the roster for qualifying but has started the last two games for the U.S.

Herdman calls Costa Rica a well-organized team that has grown together.

“I can’t believe I’m amongst some really great names”, she said afterward, reports Concacaf.com. “As the game wears on they get a little more disorganized”. Captain and playmaker Shirley Cruz, who plays for Paris Saint-Germain, was well-marshalled. It’s not like it’s easy to score this many goals. “They can hurt you”, Scott said. To that point, goalkeeper Kimika Forbes had done well against unrelenting pressure, but on this routine play, she allowed the ball to slip between her arms and then between her legs.

Canada raised its career record against Costa Rica to 10-0-0, outscoring the Ticas 33-4 in the process.

The USA and Canada women’s soccer teams may both have qualified for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, but the two rivals will undoubtedly be looking to come out on top in what promises to be an exciting encounter in Houston on Sunday. Sinclair, who played for the University of Portland and is now on the roster for the NWSL’s Portland Thorns, sat out of that match.
