United States decathlete Ashton Eaton wins gold medal

It was a terrific day at the track for the United States, and one that also featured one of the Olympics’ most odd moments in athletics history. USA’s Ashley Spencer joined Muhammad on the podium as the bronze medalist in the 400m hurdles, and Joe Kavacs also won the silver in the shot put. Allyson Felix and English Gardner dropped the baton during the second exchange in Thursday morning’s prelims and failed to advance. However, the Americans won an appeal because they were bumped by a Brazilian runner causing the mishap.

But what to do? Correspondent Tom Banse reports on the now two-time gold medal victor from Eugene.

If he is to sprint where no man has gone before, he will need to run faster than his own world record of 19.19s which he set back in 2009.

That must be one competitive household.

“We don’t go on dates, and we don’t really spend time together”.

“It was different, it was really weird”.

“Our relationship helps us because we understand what each other is doing, like physically and mentally”, she said.

Ashton Eaton of the US toughed it out at Rio 2016 to win his second straight Olympic decathlon gold medal, equalling the Olympic record and becoming the first man since Great Britain’s Daley Thompson to win back-to-back golds in the event. Kerron Clement and Dalilah Muhammad completing the first US sweep of Olympic 400-meter hurdles golds seven hours apart.

What more could the now two-time Olympic champion Eaton do on Thursday night to get just a sliver of the limelight that shines so brightly wherever Usain Bolt goes. He now has eight gold medals all-time, one short of the track record. He’s 19-0 in those races, and a ideal 8-0 in the Olympics.

“Those matches are three or four hours long”.

“That is why it’s my last Olympics”, Bolt said.

And teammate James Feigen spoke to police Thursday and gave a revised statement, according to the USOC. Why do they not get the attention others do?

Chinese diver Ren Qian was born in this century. Earlier, Kerron Clement won his first individual gold at the Olympics in the men’s 400 hurdles.

“She is such an inspiration to me”, Eaton said. “I think from now on I’ll train harder, I’ll work harder so I can focus on my future”.

In December 2014 the two sailors from Britain were robbed at knifepoint during a training trip.

The skiffs will round off the competition as the men and women’s 49er classes reach their climax while better winds than those which graced Rio Wednesday will be required if the 470 sailing medal races are to be concluded.

They won the women’s 470 class Thursday.

However, Ashton, 28, says he and his 27-year-old college sweetheart are a flawless match. “This is the time for you to do it to cap it off.’ – to see the way he handles himself is awesome”.

“I know, right? Exactly”, U.S. decathlete Jeremy Taiwo said. “So hopefully people can read about me as the greatest”. “This is for you”.

“I felt somebody. I didn’t know who it was”.

Ahmad Abughaush delivered Jordan’s first ever Olympic medal – and it was gold. She beat Nikita Glasnovic of Sweden 5-1 to win bronze in the -57kg class. “I was on the ground, exhausted”.

Ashton Eaton, goofball or serious?

“He has always supported me but I’m a bit jealous because he got silver and mine is bronze”. She had contemplated retirement, but said she has made a decision to stick around. What are you most looking forward to in the games?
