United States defence chief arrives in Iraq’s Arbil
“On the other hand, what this tells us also is that the forces we’re aligned with… are now becoming solid fighting forces”. One goal is to get allies to take on some of the missions being done by some of the approximately 3,500 USA troops in Iraq, so that those forces can take on more specialized roles.

“If the Prime Minister asks for them, they can be available on a very short notice”, Colonel Steve Warren, a spokesman for the US-led coalition in Iraq, said of the Apache helicopters.
It is just a matter of time before the Islamic State (ISIL or Daesh in Arabic) terrorist group is defeated by the Iraqi army, Australia’s chief of joint operations, Vice Adm. David Johnston, said Friday.
In recent days, Iraqi forces have retaken parts of Ramadi in what USA officials describe as a slow and deliberate attempt to penetrate laden with militant defenses.
Last week, Carter told Congress that the United States would provide attack helicopters or combat advisers if they are requested by the Iraqi government and if circumstances indicate a need.
The move follows al-Abadi’s ultimatum to turn to the UN Security Council if Turkish forces were not withdrawn within 48 hours.
“There are a number of complex relationships that the government of Iraq has to tend to, and we are here in Iraq at the behest of that government”.
“We are trying to concentrate our position”, he said.
“This is still a war…so we shouldn’t be Pollyanna-ish about that”, he added.
“As attacks go, they were pretty significant”, said Brig.
The secretary commended President Masoud Barzani of Iraq’s Kurdistan region on the Kurdish peshmerga troops retaking Sinjar from ISIL control; he said it’s important because it separates the Iraqi-Mosul side of the theater from the Syrian-Raqqah side.
The bombings and attacks happened in villages north of the provincial capital, Ramadi, where Iraqi soldiers are based. Powerful Iranian-backed Shi’ite militia groups who are aligned with the Shi’ite Abadi’s government against Islamic State also oppose a greater US presence. Subsequent reports from U.S. officials suggested they believed Iraq would accept the offer.
The attack took place during a multi-pronged IS operation aimed at breaking through Iraqi Kurdish lines in several areas around Mosul, the jihadists’ main hub in Iraq.
