United States election: Leaked email row as Democratic convention looms

Indeed, when calling for Wasserman Schultz’s resignation, Sanders made sure to point out the most important thing is supporting Clinton in her bid for president.

Still, there’s no telling how the email leak will hurt her re-election campaign, said Florida delegate Mitch Ceasar, who has known her for 24 years in Broward County politics.

Some emails leaked by WikiLeaks seem to suggest that party insiders tried to sabotage the campaign by Hillary Clinton’s rival Bernie Sanders.

On Friday, WikiLeaks released almost 20,000 emails from a 17-month span that appeared to have been obtained by someone who hacked into the accounts of seven top party officials.

Major Democratic donor John Morgan, who has been outspoken in his criticism of Wasserman Schultz, said he was shocked that the congresswoman was insisting on speaking to delegates this week.

One email, in particular, caught the attention of Sanders loyalists. In another, Wasserman Schultz refers to Sanders’ campaign manager as a “damn liar”.

Just a week after talking smack about the Republican National Convention, the Democrats are having their own problems. He’s a former Richmond mayor, Virginia governor and senator, and Democratic National Committee chairman, but he’s never run nationally before.

“It goes without saying the function of the DNC”, Sanders said, “is to represent all of the candidates to be fair and even-minded”.

Sanders said he’s always been suspicious of Wasserman Schultz and the DNC, telling ABC News’ George Stephanopolous on Sunday, “I told you long time ago that the DNC was not running a fair operation, that they were supporting Secretary Clinton”. She faced criticism through her tenure for both her work was the spokeswoman for the party and her ability to fundraise. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Fla., to quit as chairwoman immediately.

Canova calls Wasserman Schultz a politician who bends to the interests of big donors and no longer votes as a progressive.

It also overshadowed preparations in Philadelphia for Clinton’s coronation as the nominee to face Trump in the November 8 presidential election.

She had reportedly been under intense pressure from leading Dems to step down.

His supporters were already dismayed last week when Clinton passed over liberal favourites like US Senator Elizabeth Warren of MA to select the more moderate U.S. Senator Tim Kaine of Virginia as her vice presidential running mate.

The Sanders campaign also protested her decision to temporarily limit their access to the party’s digital infrastructure after staffers were discovered to have taken advantage of a brief data breach and gained access to other candidates’ voter profiling.

Rawlings-Blake is a last-minute fill-in Debbie Wasserman Schultz, the ousted Democratic National Committee leader.

On the eve of the four-day spectacle, the 19,000 hacked emails published by WikiLeaks appeared to show top officials at the supposedly neutral Democratic National Committee working to tip the scales toward Clinton.

“There’s simply no one better at taking the fight to the Republicans than Debbie – which is why I am glad that she has agreed to serve as honorary chair of my campaign’s 50-state program to gain ground and elect Democrats in every part of the country, and will continue to serve as a surrogate for my campaign nationally, in Florida, and in other key states”. She will be the first African American woman to head the party.

Wasserman Schultz’s resignation won’t be effective until the end of the week. But it was her role overseeing the 2016 primary process that ultimately led to her undoing.

While Mr Sanders gave Mrs Clinton a ringing endorsement at a rally in New Hampshire nearly two weeks ago – helping to bring two divided camps of Democrats together for the general-election battle against Republican nominee Donald Trump – the Vermont senator had called for Ms Wasserman Schultz, a congresswoman from Florida, to stand down as chairman of the DNC over the committee’s apparent impartiality in the primary election.
