United States expands sanctions over Russia’s activity in Ukraine
The EU concluded that Russian Federation had failed to fully respect the roadmap to peace in eastern Ukraine, as determined by the so-called Minsk accord.

According to the Council’s press release, the extension of the current sanctions is to enable the Council to continue their assessment of the progress of the Minsk Agreements.
For his part, Russia’s economic development minister, Alexey Ulyukaev, said that Moscow’s retaliatory trade measures are in reaction to Ukraine applying the EU’s sanctions regime against his country.
Brussels meanwhile blamed Russia Monday for the failure of last-ditch talks meant to ease Moscow’s fears about an European Union free trade accord with Ukraine due to take effect on January 1. But Moscow reiterated its demands to amend – and further delay – the EU-Ukraine trade deal, which Malmström had earlier rejected as a red line.
Moscow claims it undermines its economic interests in Ukraine, a former Soviet-era satellite, and will allow a flood of cheap European Union products into one of its key markets.
– Twelve are entities, including three Russian banks, operating in the Crimean region of Ukraine, which was annexed by Russia previous year.
“I found it surprising that we should want to confirm the sanctions without first having had a little discussion”, he said after the summit. “So stability is doable for Russian Federation, but they are not interested”, Mr. Klimkin said.
The Kremlin argues that the Russian-backed Eurasian Economic Union comprising Russia, Kazakhstan, Armenia, Krygyzstan and Belarus would be harmed by Ukraine’s closer relationship with the EU.
About the sanctions, the council said: “They target certain exchanges with Russian Federation in the financial, energy and defense sectors and in the area of dual-use goods”.
Reflecting the discordant forces at work Monday, French Defence Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian flew into Moscow for talks on bolstering cooperation against Islamic State jihadists in Syria.
The collapse of talks between EU, Ukrainian and Russian officials came as the bloc extended its economic sanctions against Russia because of its military involvement in eastern Ukraine.

The EU separately has imposed visa bans and asset freezes targeting several associates of President Vladimir Putin and others involved in Russia’s annexation of Crimea.
