United States expresses concern over Kashmir unrest, says in touch with Indian govt

The disputed Himalayan region of Kashmir was split between India and Pakistan in 1948, after they fought a brief war over it. It remains at the heart of animosity between the nuclear-armed neighbours.

Home minister Rajnath Singh will visit Islamabad on August 3 and 4 to attend the meeting of home ministers and interior ministers of South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (Saarc)?nations.

Indian forces have killed more than 50 people in Kashmir over the past two weeks to curb a rapidly escalating protest against the extrajudicial killing of a Kashmiri leader, Burhan Wani.

Asserting that Pakistan wanted to further stoke fires in Kashmir through Wani’s death, Khajuria said Islamabad has tried to take benefit from the encounter internationally.

The participants of the march maintained that the Indian government must recognise Kashmir and its freedom movement.

Hafeez Sayeed and the PM of the Pakistan openly criticized the killing of Burhan Wani and a black day was declared in the entire Pakistan which just clearly shows the pro terror policy of Pakistan, he said. Worldwide rights bodies are acting as a silent spectator, he added.

The last meeting of SAARC Interior/Home Ministers’ conference was held in Kathmandu in 2014 when the Home Minister had said that member-nations of the group were facing common challenges and they should cooperate with each other to address them.

Chairperson of Dukhtaran-e-Millat (DeM), Syedah Aasiyeh Andrabi, on Thursday said that Pakistan must prepare its envoys in various countries regarding the Kashmir issue in order to defeat “false Indian claims” at the global level.

India has asked Pakistan to stop its sponsorship of terrorist groups operating from its soil who have targeted India and fostered militancy in Jammu and Kashmir.
