United States troop extension can make ‘real difference’ for Afghanistan: Obama
So this might not work?

But now, by late next year or early 2017 when Obama steps down and the 45th United States president is sworn in, their numbers are expected to remain at about 5,500. And New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said the president was “waking up to the fact that disengaging America from the world and allowing there to be safe havens for terrorists is not the right way to protect American homeland security and national security”.
The war in Afghanistan has claimed 2,372 American lives, according to the specialist website iCasualties. The presence of 5,500 troops – down from more than 100,000 at its peak – may make only a modest difference militarily.
“The trouble is military power is a deeply political process and the political interests we have in these conflicts are very different than the political interests that our allies have in these conflicts”, Biddle said.
The president did withdraw all US troops from Iraq in late 2011, a moment he heralded as a promise kept to a war-weary nation.
As a result, the victor of the 2016 presidential election will become the third American commander in chief to oversee the Afghan war.
“To end fighting, we are ready to initiate meaningful negotiations with all sides concerned”, a statement issued by the militant group said.
Mr. Obama’s government tried the same approach in Afghanistan.
What else is weighing on Obama’s decision?
“It was based on ground realities as Afghan security forces are still weak, the unity government is not stable”, he said.
The troops that will remain late next year or in early 2017 will stay at a small number of bases, including at Bagram Airfield – the largest United States military base in the country – Jalalabad in the east, and Kandahar in the south. Without US support, Iraqi forces quickly lost key cities in northern Iraq to a sudden and effective ISIS advance. Obama then went on the campaign trail seeking re-election boasting about pulling out all troops from Iraq.
“The USA decision is a good basis for that”.
Obama’s decision – announced in a televised address from the Roosevelt Room of the White House – means he bequeaths to his successor a 14-year war that he inherited from George W. Bush.
Obama announced the end of the Afghan war with similar fanfare last spring, saying it was time for the U.S.to “turn the page” on more than a decade of deadly conflicts.
Earnest had an answer to that.
“It’s generally acknowledged that it was a mistake to have invaded Iraq [in 2003]”, James Dobbins, who served as the United States Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan, told DW.
Obama is certainly hoping his decision will pave the way for an end to the conflict. “Due to military efforts by the Pakistanis, there has been displacement of al-Qaida into Afghanistan”, she said.
Beyond the recent security troubles in Afghanistan, USA commanders have also expressed concern about Islamic State fighters moving into the country and gaining recruits from within the Taliban.
“Does this buy us a few time and leverage to move the ball forward on that?” asked Dalton, the former Department of Defense official.
“We believe that when Afghans are convinced regarding the end of occupation and withdrawal of foreign troops than all problems could be easily solved through intra-Afghan understanding and dialogue”, it added.
