United States urges Turkey to withdraw troops from Iraq

Earlier this month, Turkey deployed troops to a base in Nineveh province where it has a long-running training programme for forces battling the Islamic State jihadist group. Prime Minister al-Abadi stated after the meeting that he had reiterated earlier statements on the matter and said that ‘the only way to resolve the crisis is the full withdrawal of Turkish troops from Iraqi territory’.

However, Iraqi authorities regard the move a flagrant breach of the country’s sovereignty and have repeatedly called on Ankara to withdraw its forces.
