United States women’s water polo team beats Italy to defend Olympic gold medal
Brazil’s fanatical population craved just three Olympic gold medals at their home Games and the set was complete on the final day of competition at Rio 2016 when their men’s volleyball team beat Italy on their way to the top of the podium at the “Little Maracanã”. Hungary evened the score a minute later with a goal from Krisztina Garda.

USA captain Maggie Steffens leads all women’s players with 16 goals in five games in Rio.
After Bujka scored to get Hungary within one at the beginning of the second half, the United States responded with four of the next five goals. Fischer is also the youngest-ever American water polo medalist, male or female.
Midway through the first quarter, however, the USA fell behind 2-1 and trailed for the first time at the Games.
“The U.S.is the strongest and they have the most and biggest, strongest players in all the Olympic Games, ” Hungary coach Attila Biro said. Kaleigh Gilchrist then scored to put the US up 8-4 with 3:06 left on the clock. Their first five goals came from five different players and eight players scored in all, with Kiley Neushul (three), Rachel Fattal (two) and Makenzie Fischer (two) getting multiple goals. After a Hungarian turnover, Kiley Neushul netted a pass from Gilchrist and the US moved to a 10-6 lead.
The embarrassing imbroglio offended the Olympic hosts and overshadowed the US swimmers’ dominance in Rio, relegating to the margins Michael Phelps’ medal haul in his own Olympic farewell. Tami Craig took a pass and immediately backhanded it in to give the US a 12-7 lead with just over 2 minutes left in the third.
It was a first Olympic gold for goalkeeper Ashleigh Johnson, who in Rio had become the first black woman to represent the U.S.in Olympic water polo. She shot 76 and is seven shots behind.
In another Olympics dominated by USA women, Steffens and her teammates shined as brightly as any of them.
Bianconi scored two goals in each game against China and Russian Federation to bring her total to 11 in Rio. Coach Adam Krikorian’s brother, Blake, died unexpectedly two days before the opening ceremony, and Krikorian returned to the United States for services before flying back to Rio on the eve of the US opener. Keszthelyi bounced one off the surface right past Johnson with 18 seconds to go, but the clock ran out and the US got the victory, 14-10.
“My players gave it everything that they could today”. But the Americans’ consistency proved too much for Hungary.
USA men and women have won gold medals in nine different sports so far during the Rio Games, but in no other sport has their performance been so dominating.
Krikorian wasn’t thrilled with the defensive effort. Its more of a sign of respect and love that I think we all have for each other.. “Our preparation didn’t just start this year, it began four years ago and we’ve been building our team for that long”.
“Of course U.S. is the best team to beat because they won the last Olympic Games and many tournaments”, he added.
Lydia Ko, the No. 1 player in women’s golf, made the first hole-in-one of her career as she raced into contention, two strokes back.
“We made her captain for a reason”.
“She doesn’t feel fear”, Conti said. We will be switching to a new platform early in September.
In a thrilling high-scoring match that saw the lead and possession change hands continuously, the Hungarians looked to have one hand on the bronze when they moved into an 11-9 lead in the final quarter. “Obviously, he’d be rooting for us”.

Prior to Wednesday’s match, the Americans were shooting 44 percent in the tournament, according to the Olympic web site. “Their defense has been really good and their goalie is playing”.
