Univ. of MA orders students to shelter over possible gunman on campus

Students and staff at the University of Massachusetts Amherst campus have been ordered to shelter in place after reports of armed persons on campus. Few details are being released at this time.

Police were looking for a “hostile armed person” on the campus of UMass Amherst Thursday evening.

On Twitter, the unviersity said the possibly armed suspect is a white male wearing a dark colored shirt and a gold chain. There were no reports of shots fired at the university, located about 90 miles (145 km) west of Boston. The second suspect is described as a white man in a gray sweatshirt. We will post updates as soon as they come into our newsroom.

ALERT: Please continue to shelter in place.

The shelter-in-place order was issued for the entire flagship campus of the University of MA system. Currently, 22,000 undergraduate students attend the school.

Ambulances and police were called to the scene.
