Universal’s ‘Minions’ swarms box office with $115.2M haul

Their latest box office hit, the Minions raked in an estimated $115.2 million as it opened in the US and Canada over the weekend. The biggest opening weekend of all time still belongs to “Shrek the Third” from DreamWorks Animation SKG Inc., in Glendale, which hit about $122 million in 2007. After just two weekends in theaters, “Minions“‘ foreign box office total sits at a cool $280 million. Reported by Bloomberg’s article, Universal Studios has invested more than $600 million in promoting and publicising “Minions“.

“Given that they seek to work for the most evil people on the planet, they give off this incredible happiness”, said Universal’s Duncan Clark on the Minions’ success.

An estimated 55 percent of the film’s audience was younger than 25, and 59 percent were female.

In ninth place was “Max“, a family-pleasant really feel-good film a few service canine who labored with US Marines in Afghanistan, which earned $ 3.5 million. The movie opened at No. 5 with what would appear to be an underwhelming $10 million gross. Retaining the #2 spot, the fellow Universal picture slipped a mere 38% in attendance and added another $18.1 million to its wildly high $590.6 million domestic total. The story gets bubblier with the introduction of two new characters that took Sandra Bullock and Jon Hamm’s voices.

A Bollywood action drama, “Baahubali“, earned about $3 million at 170 locations in its debut. It’s also a larger first weekend than Pixar’s critically acclaimed (and Best Picture nominee possibility) which found $90.4 million just three weeks ago.

In its opening weekend, “Despicable Me” spin-off “Minions” has managed to top the charts, becoming the second-biggest debut of an animated movie.

Despicable Me 3” is planned to be released 2017, announced Universal. Both films have gone on to make huge profits.

Warner Bros. executives say the film is a modestly priced single, but was an important showcase for writers and directors Travis Cluff and Chris Lofing. Terminator Genisys fell one place to fourth, taking in $13.7 million, which was enough to keep it above the weekend’s second new opening, horror thriller The Gallows in fifth.

But how did the other films fare at the weekend box office?

The Minions are certainly popular little characters and it looks like, when the final numbers come in today, the $115 million will stand, “Rentrak Corporation (NASDAQ: RENT) Senior Media Analyst Paul Dergarabedian told Benzinga””.
