Five brothers of the University of Alabama chapter of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity were arrested and jailed this week after an alleged hazing event left several pledges badly burned.
The arrests came following a thorough joint investigation by UAPD and the UA Office of Student Conduct.
Mark Allen Powers, 20, of Athens, AL faces one hazing charge, according to UAPD. In addition to the arrests, Bryant said the students have also been placed on interim sanctions by UA and are being referred to UA’s Office of Student Conduct.
Colter K. Anderson, 21, of Dallas, Texas; John Patrick Buckley, 21, of Houston, Texas; Hunter Lee Wagner, 20, of Huntsville, Alabama; and Richard E. Markwalter, 20, also of Huntsville, each face three hazing charges. UA officials have not made the connection at this time.

In a statement, Dean of Students Tim Hebson said his university “will not tolerate hazing” and urges “victims of… hazing incidents” to report the incidents.
