The winningest head coach in Florida Gator football history will now have his name added to Florida Field.

Spurrier also has his name in the stadium’s Ring of Honor and has a bronze statue outside the facility. Florida Field at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium will see its first football game on September 3 in the Gators’ season opener against UMass. As the Ol’ Ball Coach, he was transcendent at UF with his innovative Fun n’ Gun, winning eight SEC East Division titles, six SEC crowns, and the 1996 national championship.
Spurrier returned to the SEC in 2005 as head coach at SC. He won at least nine games every year during his tenure (1990-01). It also snuck in one more piece of stadium news.
Now, the school is honoring the coach by renaming its football field in honor of him.
“The Swamp is a special place”.
Spurrier, who coached at SC for the last 10 and a half seasons, retried last October after stumbling out of the gate with the Gamecocks. Us coaches and players thoroughly enjoyed playing in front of our fans. “Coach Spurrier did more than win a Heisman Trophy, a national championship and a bunch of games”.
The university also confirmed the news on their Gators Football Twitter account with a video looking back at Spurrier’s career during his time at UF. She has been a tremendous influence on everything I’ve done since.
Spurrier also starred at Florida as a player, competing for the Gators from 1963-66. “I had no idea that was even being considered”, Spurrier said in a statement.
