But Regent Ann Murguia from Kansas City says she wanted to hear less about pay raises and recruiting faculty and more about how students are going to afford college.
Scott, who has led Pittsburg State since July 2009, is now the state’s senior-most university CEO, Regents members noted. “But if it’s a decision of whether we can go or not, I wonder if we could survey all the kids that can’t go”. Only the University of Kansas’ medical center and Wichita State did not raise their rate increase requests, sticking with 5 percent. “What we are trying to do is maintain quality at a time when we are financially stressed due to both budget cuts and increasing costs”.
Before the vote, many regents expressed concerned about affordability, including Regent Mark Bernstein, who said a budget was a moral document that expressed priorities and aspirations.
Simon cites slumping state aid for Michigan’s universities for years.
“I think we’re going to see a lot of students who are not going to be able to afford it”, Shepard said.
“As we look back over the last 10 years, we’re actually receiving less from the state than we did in 2006 and our costs are continuing to increase”, said Allison Garrett, president of Emporia State University.
In-state freshmen and sophomores at MSU will pay 3.7% more for tuition this fall compared to past year, or about $250 per semester assuming a student takes 15 credits.
Regents in their statement said they are looking for someone with attributes that include, “intellectual achievement; impeccable integrity; successful leadership in a complex university and research environment; transparency and communication”. “As K-State constantly strives to balance access and excellence while funding sources diminish, tuition rate increases become an unfortunate necessity to balance the budget”.
