University of Toronto statement on Orlando shooting

Organizers of Chicago’s annual pride parade say the event will go on despite the worst mass shooting in U.S. history at an Orlando gay nightclub on Saturday.

“It’s hard to find the words”.

“I’ve been hearing from people how much it means to them to see somebody there, a politician there with their husband, walking hand-in-hand down the main street”, Chandra Herbert said. “The LGBT+ community is no stranger to violent attacks and we will, as we have had to do before, harness the aftermath, the grieving, the anger, into something positive that has made the next generation’s lives better”.

I know that the LGBTQ community in Toronto still experiences violence, discrimination and intolerance.

“Right now we’re just thinking of Orlando and our community there”, said Tammy Dobson, a spokesperson for Ottawa Capital Pride.

Epp says the LGBTQ community and its allies need to be vocal now more than ever in the wake of the shooting. “But this is just devastating to see, this kind of hatred happening this quickly and impacting so many lives in Florida”, Alexander said. Coming here tonight, there’s still that apprehension: “is there somebody in our community where this may have given them something to think about and an opportunity to make it happen somewhere else?”

The Pride Center of Western New York is asking people to gather at 6 p.m. for the vigil, which will begin at 6:30 p.m.

San Diego’s Pride Parade and Festival will go on as scheduled July 16 despite the deadly shooting in Orlando, Florida and arrest of an armed man in the Los Angeles area, organizers said Monday. In response, the Portland Police Bureau announced it plans to increase security patrols during the city’s annual celebration of its LGBTQ community.

In Montreal’s gay village, many people reacted with shock and sadness Sunday afternoon while pointing out that many LGBTQ individuals still face violence, even in Canada.
