The UN Security Council on Tuesday did not agree on a response to North Korea over its test-firing of three mid-range missiles during closed-door consultations but vowed to keep trying.
North Korea launched the missiles while China was hosting the Group of 20 economic summit, Power said.
“We very much favor a quick and firm reaction by the Security Council to this new provocation”, said Francois Delattre, French permanent representative to the United Nations.
“Looking at pictures and intelligence information it’s believed that North Korea fired Scud-ER missiles and that their accuracy has increased tremendously”.
“North Korea needs to know that provocations will only invite more pressure and further deepen its isolation”, Obama said on the sidelines of the East Asia Summit in Laos.
United States President Barack Obama warned North Korea on Tuesday that it was deepening its worldwide isolation following its recent missile tests.
“The launch of these missiles is another flagrant violation of the relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions and a serious setback to the global disarmament and non-proliferation regime”, the Malaysian foreign ministry said.
People watch a TV news program reporting about North Korea’s missile launch, at the Seoul Train Station in Seoul, South Korea, Sept. 5, 2016. China is North Korea’s only major ally, but ties between the neighbors have frayed amid a string of North Korean nuclear and missile tests and what many outsiders see as other provocations in recent years.
A proven submarine-launched ballistic missile system would allow deployment far beyond the Korean peninsula and a “second-strike” capability in the event of an attack on the North’s military bases.
“The Security Council must remain unequivocal and united in its condemnation of these tests”. China has urged South Korea and the U.S.to scrap the U.S. Terminal High Altitude Area Defense, or THAAD, saying it is merely meant to spy on the China.
The leaders of the three countries agreed in Seoul in November a year ago to resume their rotation of annual trilateral talks, which were shelved in 2013 and 2014 while Japan-China ties were strained over the Diaoyu Islands in the East China Sea.
Even as Obama promised a tougher stance, he did not close off the possibility for dialogue with North Korea, if it were to change course.

The three missiles were the “Rodong” type with a medium-range and able to fly about 1,000 kilometers, informed the South Korean army.
