The driver of Punjab Roadways bus, which was targeted by the terrorists in a pre-dawn attack in Dinanagar town in this district, showed tremendous presence of mind and helped save lives.
At about 3:45 am on Monday, Nanak Chand, 45, a contract driver of a Punjab Roadways bus (PB-06-G-9569), left Janial for Chandigarh with 76 passengers. I increased the speed despite the firing, I took the bus towards Gurdaspur and stopped at the Civil Hospital to enable the injured to receive medical treatment.
All three attackers were killed, along with seven other people, including the Punjab state police superintendent.
He also called up the police to inform about the incident. I thought that it was important to save their lives. He did not panic even when one of the terrorists fired at the bus after signaling the driver to stop the vehicle. “The alertness of the staff saved several lives”, a senior railway official said.
There were over 70 passengers in the bus at that time when the incident took place around 5.30 am.
A major tragedy was averted as the railway staff detected the bombs just minutes before a train with about 270 passengers was to cross the bridge.
The passenger train was carrying over 250 people and the bombs were wired to the track on a small bridge over a rivulet. The train was stopped 200 metres from the bombs.
At 5 pm, all the terrorists were declared killed.
