Until Dawn Takes Around 9 Hours On First Playthrough

Nearly all of the Butterfly Effect choices are slow-burns.

But, based on the choices you make in the game, you could easily see a totally different side of each of these characters that will make you connect with them, or sympathize with them a bit more than you normally would. At one point, I had to choose between saving one of two characters from a Saw-inspired death trap. After picking rats, I noticed that there were rats crawling around in the background of the house my characters were in. Some of those choices may not impact the story in a grand sense – Until Dawn also monitors dynamically changing character relationships and character traits – but they eventually start to roll together. From seemingly minor decisions to clear-cut forks in the road, each one can drastically alter the game’s unfolding narrative. What’s more, by looking at the Butterfly Effect menu screen, it’s incredibly easy to read the descriptions of events and figure out exactly what you need to do to achieve a different result the next time around.

All in all, it’s a well-structured game. Don’t expect to have it later when you’re under attack.

Have you ever screamed at the characters in horror movies because you know better than them? The option I was given was to either lie to him or tell him the truth.

At its best, Until Dawn is a gleefully cheesy homage to horror movies, set in a world built by a developer that clearly adores the genre. Are you OK with Until Dawn being 9 hours long? Everything plays out in the utmost linear fashion as the developers intended, with the only difference being who lives or dies before the sun comes up.

Aside from the teeth-clenching and eyebrow burning decisions to be made, this week also features the arrival of “Mega Man Legacy”, reborn from the Eclipse Engine, and Arkane Studios’ “Dishonored Definitive Edition” that encourages creative elimination of targets through proper utilization of supernatural powers, weapons, and unique gadgets. And I’m eager to play through again to confirm just that. It works for the Until Dawn and it would have been impossible if the game had come out in pieces.

I have a certain level of respect reserved for games where the scope is relatively lean-where the characters don’t save the universe but simply have to get through more personal challenges. But if you’re even slightly interested in Until Dawn, I’d give it a rent at the very least. You’ll also arbitrarily light lanterns, flip through journals, and shoot padlocks off of doors.

Like Jason Voorhees, you can never run anywhere. When you are controlling them, they can only walk. I constantly found myself holding my breath and praying along with the character that the pursuer wouldn’t find me. It was praised for its gorgeous graphics on the PS4 and still holds well to this day. I experienced extreme slowdown and choppiness during a snowball fight between two characters that rendered the game all but unplayable for a few minutes until the next scene booted up.

After you finish you do get to re-start the game at the beginning of any of Until Dawn’s nine chapters, which means that you can keep playing each episode in its entirety (about an hour each) until you really explore the choices therein and get them “right”. These recaps are entirely counterproductive to the immersion factor of the game, and they become especially frustrating when completing several chapters back to back in a single gameplay session. It may be the most prominent setting shown in trailers and screenshots, and the characters’ assumed home base of sorts, but a lot of your time playing Until Dawn will be spent exploring its mountainous range. Without these elements, the game becomes a skeletal collectable hunt peppered with QTEs and the occasional tense cinematic.

That said, the way content is accessed once the credits have rolled leaves much to be desired. Although your first playthrough will still be enjoyable, thanks to some relatively strong voice acting and the thrill of the unknown, once you unmask all of the game’s tricks, that fun quotient is lowered considerably. Where Until Dawn is new, is that it features an unpredictable and dynamically adaptive story, where gamers’ actions within the game can have a huge impact on how Until Dawn pans out.
